Umbra is built around a single, quiet idea: light that never reveals its source. A matte black circle floats within a volume of frosted acrylic, its edges blurred by a cool blue glow that rises invisibly from below. There is no bulb to spot, no fixture to admire -- only the soft, even luminance that seems to emanate from the material itself. The effect is closer to an eclipse caught mid-motion than a conventional lamp, a disc of shadow ringed by a halo of cold light. Mounted on a wall, Umbra reads less as decoration and more as atmosphere: a panel of light that changes the character of a room without announcing itself. The frosted surface diffuses the LED into a smooth gradient, free of hot spots or visible diodes, so the glow feels ambient rather than directional. Printed canvas behind the acrylic adds depth and texture, giving the piece a layered quality that shifts subtly as you move past it. Umbra is deliberately restrained in palette -- black, frost, and blue -- which lets it sit comfortably in spaces that are themselves quiet and considered. It rewards proximity: up close, the diffusion and the faint texture of the canvas become visible, while from across a room it resolves into a single glowing form. The piece is as much about the absence of detail as the presence of it, an object built to be felt before it is fully seen.
In a room, Umbra functions as a secondary light source that does more emotional work than its size suggests. Hung in a hallway, a bedroom, or a living space with a darker palette, it introduces a cool, blue-toned glow that contrasts naturally with warmer ambient lighting, creating depth and visual interest without competing for attention. Because the light diffuses through frosted acrylic rather than projecting in a beam, Umbra does not cast hard shadows or create glare; instead it produces a soft wash that reads as mood rather than illumination. This makes it especially effective in spaces used for winding down -- a reading nook, a bedroom wall opposite the bed, or a media room where a quiet secondary glow is more welcome than another switch flipped to full brightness. The piece is equally suited to minimalist interiors, where its restrained geometry and limited palette reinforce a sense of calm, and to more eclectic spaces, where it acts as a grounding, monochromatic counterpoint to busier surroundings. Umbra's vertical orientation and modest depth mean it sits close to the wall, occupying floor and surface space efficiently while still registering as a substantial visual element. Whether used alone as a focal point or paired with other wall pieces in a gallery arrangement, it holds its own without requiring symmetry or careful coordination, settling into a room the way a shadow settles quietly into a corner at dusk.
Umbra is constructed from a frosted acrylic shell mounted over a printed canvas ground, with a 5V blue LED integrated along the bottom edge of the piece. The acrylic is chosen specifically for its diffusion quality -- thick enough to fully obscure the light source, translucent enough to let the glow pass through evenly across the entire surface. Hanging hardware is built into the back of the panel, allowing it to sit flush against the wall like a framed work, and the cord runs to a standard 120V plug suited for US outlets, so no special wiring or installation is required. At just four inches deep, Umbra maintains a low profile that keeps it from intruding into the room, while its 32 by 21 inch footprint gives it enough scale to anchor a wall on its own. Lantern&Light designed Umbra to be the kind of piece that rewards a second look: the longer it stays lit in a room, the more it becomes part of the architecture rather than an addition to it. Every unit is checked for even light diffusion before it ships, ensuring the halo effect reads as intended -- soft, continuous, and free of visible LED points -- straight out of the box, ready to hang.
